Keep Hope and Be Optimistic: A Conversation with A Dutch Journalist

Those who just have a glimpse of the evilness of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) feel it unbeatable. But I encourage them that good will prevail.

I had a nearly two-hour long interview with a Dutch journalist. The media she works with started to look into a few topics on China, and one of them is the Confucius Institute.

After one closure in 2019, the Netherlands now has two Confucius Institutes. The journalist told me that the Dutch CIs were initially pursued by the local government. So the Dutch municipal government and an investment firm are also signatories of the CI agreement. It is indeed a rare arrangement for most CIs are partnership among the Chinese government, a Chinese university and a foreign university/school. The Dutch CIs have proven that the Confucius Institutes are not just an educational institution.

Basically, the Confucius institutes served as a bridge between foreign countries and the Chinese government. They help the foreign countries to get more opportunity of making money in China as well as bringing Chinese money into their own society.

For the Chinese government, the involvement of the local governments and business sector enhanced the ability of the CIs to influence local society which is exactly one of the aims of the CI initiative.

I shared with the Dutch journalist my past experience of working in Chinese universities, so that she could understand how the CCP control the thoughts, speech, and behaviours of the Chinese people. I also shared my firsthand experiences with CIs worldwide: how the CCP uses CIs to export CCP propaganda, suffocate free speech, breach human rights codes, and even conduct espionage activities, and how foreign countries are willing to sacrifice universal values in exchange for CIs.

We also talked about the CCP’s live organ harvesting, the persecution of Falun Gong, and the mistreatment of Uyghurs.

Before we end the conversation, she asked me if I had anything to add. I said, “I hope the Western free world will join hands to confront the CCP, otherwise the CCP will win and the world will be in the dark.”

She asked me, “Do you think that will happen?”

I said, “Eventually it will happen, but maybe temporarily the CCP is in the upper hand, especially now that Biden is in the White House, but eventually we will win.”

She said, “You’re very optimistic. We’re just starting our study. We’re really pessimistic.”

I encouraged her, “You know in China we say, ‘Good will win over evil.’ What you and your media are doing is very, very important. Let’s all do our part to educate people about the danger of the Chinese Communist Party.”
